A historical day for the Geoscience community in Malaysia. 

 Institute of Geology Malaysia (IGM), Geological Society of Malaysia (GSM), Board of Geologists Malaysia (BOG), and Malaysian Geoscience Consultants and Services Association (MyGeo) visited the site where the debris flow disaster event had occurred in Gunung Jerai, Kedah, Malaysia causing major destruction in Yan and Kuala Muda District. We have been briefed by the Director of Mineral and Geoscience Department (Kedah, Perlis, and Pulau Pinang), P. Geol. Abdullah Sulaiman, FIGM on the underlying geological and geomorphological factors of the debris flow phenomenon. 

 The geoscience community has also donated a cumulated sum of donations to the local community. We are hoping that the government invested more in geological hazard and risk management to ensure the sustainability and livelihood of the community exposed to the risk of geohazards.

The 1st Annual General Meeting of the Malaysian Geoscience Consultants and Services Association (MyGeo) was successfully conducted virtually. MyGeo is a trade organisation for companies actively involved with geoscience-related industry. The Geoscience Industry included; oil and gas, mining and quarrying, environmental and engineering, groundwater and natural resources, and any other related industries. Trust MyGeo is ready to spurs Geoscience Industry and to support all government initiatives as well as the development of geoscience profession. 

 The new council line up as follow: 

 President: Geostrength Engineering Sdn Bhd (Dato Amran) 

 Vice President: BTS Engineering Sdn Bhd (Safarudin) 

 Secretary: Geoscience Consult Sdn Bhd (Abd Rasid) 

 Treasurer: Geosolution Resources (Ahmad Nizam) 

 Council: 

 1. Enggeo Bumi Sdn Bhd (Ahmad Ibrahim) – focus on northern region (Perlis, Kedah, P Pinang and Perak) 

 2. Geomag Geological (Dr Anuri) – focus on central-southern region (Selangor, KL/Putrajaya, N Sembilan, Melaka and Johor 

 3. Geosoil Engineering (Razimin) – focus on eastern region (Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang) 

 4. Uji Teguh Resources (Khairul Fahmee) – focus on Sabah (as representative) 

 5. GMC Consultant (Dr Richard Mani Banda) – focus on Sarawak

Earlier this week, a team of geologists from GMT Group has joined and provided manpower to Jabatan Mineral dan Geosains Selangor (JMG) for data collection at Kemensah Heights, Selangor. 

 A landslide incident has occurred in the area triggered by extreme rainfall. The investigation is conducted to identify the underlying geological factors that build-up to the landslide incident. 

 GMT Group is committed to helping JMG in data collection as part of our corporate social responsibility programme.

Banyak kenangan lalu yang kita boleh kongsi bersama. Rata2 kami semua di awal 50-an jadi banyak cerita lama dan kenangan memang lebih kurang sama esp bila kita sembang pasal KL sekitar hujung 80-an dan awal 90-an. Cerita bas mini, ampang park, pertama complex dan lain2 lagi…. 

Memang best sampai tak terasa jam dah pukul 5ptg. Kita gerak tergesa2 sampai terlupa beberapa perkara. Terbaikla bro Rosyam and the gang.

Alhamdulillah. Geopark & Geotourism Creative Solutions Sdn Bhd (GGCS) would like to welcome Dr Rapidah Mat Stafa as Principal Conservation Geologist in the company. Dr Rapidah obtained her PhD in Conservation Geology from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 2019 with a Thesis entitled The Assessment of Geoheritage Resources (Geosite) for Geotourism Development of Lenggong Valley, Perak. She also has published several papers related to conservation geology and geoheritage. Currently, she will be helping GGCS on part time basis until her full employment on 1 Sept 2021.

Alhamdulillah, on the edge of MCO 3.0, GMT GROUP received a visit by our new addition who suppose to start work on the following day. 

 The new appointment is Muhammad Zakwan Zulkifli as Principal Geotechnical Engineer. He obtained MSc in Geotechnical Engineering from UTM in 2020 and BEng in Civil Engineering from UiTM in 2014. He has served as Geotechnical Engineer in several consultancy firms in Malaysia. Trust he will spearhead our Geomechanics Division further under Geomechanics Consult Sdn Bhd. 

 Geomechanics Consult Sdn Bhd is part of GMT GROUP providing specialised consultancy in landfill engineering, geotechnical engineering, rock engineering, mining and quarrying engineering. Registered with BEM and MOF.

The lecture will reflect almost 30 years of lecturer journey in environmental and engineering geology as well as geotechnical engineering. The lecture will start with lecturer’s experiences in site investigation, instrumentation, geological mapping, ground treatment, foundation and slope stabilization. Projects undertaken from onshore to offshore, and from local to international projects. Significant case studies from local projects include light rail transit, Sungai Selangor Dam, Tanjung Bin Power Plant and Putrajaya will be shared. International projects mainly for oil and gas industry covering Southeast Asia, part of Middle East, past of Central Asia and Western Europe. The core values and concept in engineering geology including engineering geological model and total geological approach will be discussed with some applications. Some misconceptions on the practice especially on Geological Terrain Mapping is adressed. Lastly, the lecture will be concluded on way forward and suggestions to improve the environmental and engineering geological practice in Malaysia including the training and teaching of the subject.

Berlangsung Majlis Perpisahan Afiq Farhan dan Farid Dali. Keduanya menerima tawaran kerajaan untuk berkhidmat sebagai Pegawai Tadbir dan Diplomatik (PTD). Dalam suasana pandemik Covid-19, tawaran kerja dari kerajaan terutamanya sebagai PTD tidak dapat kita bendung. Kalau dulu tawaran syarikat petroleum selalu tidak dapat kita atasi. Sekarang telah berubah. 

 Mereka berdua adalah tunggak utama GMT Group sejak mula ditubuhkan. Kehilangan pasti sedikit sebanyak menggugat keupayaan syarikat. Namun patah tumbuh hilang berganti. Anak syarikat yang tinggal tidak kurang hebatnya. Perlukan sedikit masa untuk tambah pengalaman.
