NATURE OF PROJECT: GEOSCIENCE INPUT IN URBAN & TOWN PLANNING
CLIENT: MAJLIS BANDARAYA IPOH (MBI)
DURATION: MAY 2019 – NOV 2020
LOCATION: IPOH, PERAK
INTRODUCTION
Local Plan (RT) is a written statement containing a map and supported by implementation guidelines. It describes in more detail all the general policies and proposals for land development and is being used as well to translate the strategic policies of the Structure Plan into a more detailed and practical physical form. Ipoh City Council Local Plan 2035 (Replacement) is prepared specifically to replace the Ipoh Local Plan 2020.
RESULTS AND FINDINGS
Geo-sites Area Management and Development to Generate Population Income
Geo-sites area can generally be divided into two zones, namely the (protected zone) and the (conservation zone). All infrastructure development aimed at developing the geo-site area is allowed within the conservation zone. As for protected zone, no permanent structured development is allowed so that geo-site resources can be properly preserved. Therefore, detailed geological resource mapping is needed to determine the actual boundaries of the geo-site that need to be protected and at the same time be able to develop the geo-site conservation zone around it.

Enforcement of Activities in Mineral Tenements
Comprehensive planning and enforcement need to be implemented in order to preserve the landscape, geological, biological, cultural and tourism values in Ipoh for the long term, in line with the existing limestone resource industry. All mining lease applications must follow the procedures and flow charts set by the Department of Minerals and Geosciences such as the preparation of the Mining Scheme Approval Letter, Feasibility Study and Environmental Impact Study (EIA). All quarrying activities must comply with the rules and conditions set by the Department of Minerals and Geosciences and in consideration to local geological factors and the threat of geological disasters by using latest quarrying methods and technologies such as subsurface open cast mining.
CONCLUSION
Planning enforcement and preparation of specific development guidelines should be provided to facilitate the development control process within the study area. Geo-site area management should also be strengthened so that it can be developed and benefit the local population. Latest quarrying technique should be explored and to consider more sustainable quarrying and mining agenda.
